In the face of climate change and biodiversity loss, the Honam National Institute of Biological Resources (HNIBR) will take on the toughest challenges we face.
Global climate change and biodiversity loss have become imminent threats to island and coastal wildlife. As climate change alters the environments in which they live, creatures that have adapted to their previous habitats find it difficult to survive. Consequently, they must migrate to new habitats or adapt to new environments; however, if the change is too rapid, many species may fail to adapt and face extinction.
During this climate crisis, biodiversity conservation must prioritize maintaining healthy ecosystems and creating environments where various forms of life can coexist harmoniously. In this regard, the HNIBR, as a research institute focused on island and coastal organisms, is dedicated to advancing research on biodiversity conservation and developing strategies to address the climate crisis. Furthermore, to ensure a sustainable future for bioresources, the HNIBR will undertake the following:
- First, it will take the lead in biodiversity conservation through research on island and coastal organisms.
- Second, it will establish a foundation for the sustainable use of island and coastal bioresources and support the bioindustry by developing technologies related to biomaterials.
- Third, it will provide quality education on biodiversity.
- Fourth, it will fulfill its social responsibility as a public institute by practicing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) management.
